Learn to turn with no torn grain
Stuart's class is based on improving the understanding and application of the most effective way to cut wood on a lathe. There are six fundamental cuts in woodturning, almost identical for both spindle and bowl turning. The style of woodturning that is taught in this class is hundreds of years old and based on the European style of Push Cut. However, it has been simplified to work with less tools and simple grinds.
Everyone who takes the class learns to cut the wood with zero torn grain and with very little physical effort – there should be no stress or strain on the body. Almost any cut can be performed with 2 lbs. of pressure or less. Even roughing down a large rough-cut bowl requires very little muscle when utilizing this push cut. Students will leave the Woodturning Fundamentals class with a clear understanding of how each technique works and can be applied.
Every cut is broken down into comprehensive steps, so that anyone can learn and perfect these cuts. Each of the six cuts is practiced in a variety of both spindle and bowl turning shapes. Students learn to free hand grind, which is quicker and more accurate than jig grinding.
While the focus of this class is on building technical skill rather than trying to make a masterpiece, students will work on a number of different spindle turning and bowl turning projects such as thin bowls, square bowls, ornaments with fine finials, etc.
Tools, practice wood, and face shields are all available but feel free to bring your own. We don't have enough smocks for everyone, so bring one if you can. Practice wood will be low quality, if you wish to have a piece to take home it would be best if you bring your own blanks. Hardwood and exotic turning blanks are also available at our store (3.2 miles away from the class location), but the store will only be open for a half hour before the class starts each day.
Coffee, snacks, and lunch will be provided. Please let us know in advance if you have any food allergies so we can plan accordingly.
